The Managing Director was trained at a National “Big 4” firm, has almost 18 years of public accounting and tax experience and is highly involved in all firm engagements. The current team is young but experienced, and consists of the Managing Director, a Senior Manager, a Junior Manager, a Tax Specialist (contract) and a Bookkeeper. Our client profile is small to medium sized Canadian, owner-managed private companies and self-employed individuals in various industries.

About the position

The successful candidate for the Jr. Staff Accountant (co-op) role will be an integral member of the growing professional services team and will report directly to both the Sr. Manager and Jr. Manager. This role is primarily non-client facing (at-first), but the successful candidate will have the opportunity to move into a client-facing role should they possess good verbal communication skills and be interested in such an advancement.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary responsibilities:

  • Preparation of Compilation engagement financial information (previously NTR)
    • Trial balance entry and organization of supporting documents received
    • Produce general ledger detail and other reports from QuickBooks to support balances
    • Preparation of year-end adjusting entries and support
    • Map and balance financial statements to TB using Caseview (component of Caseware)
    • Preparation of simple corporate tax returns (no Cdn tax experience required)
  • Bookkeeping in QuickBooks Online (QBO)
    • Full-cycle bookkeeping for established clients including cash transaction coding
    • Monthly, quarterly, or annual bank and credit card account reconciliations
    • Manual bank and credit card transaction upload and coding
    • Creation and monitoring of bank rules for efficient transaction coding
    • Identifying transactions that require further information to process
    • Setup new QBO files (prepare custom chart of accounts & memorized custom reports)

Secondary responsibilities:

  • Assistance with preparation of T1 Individual income tax returns (March to April)
    • Organization of tax documents received and data-entry into tax software
    • Preparation of simple business income and rental income summaries using client provided data with comparative information
    • Summarizing eligible medical expenses and charitable donation receipts
    • Canadian tax knowledge/experience is considered an asset but not required
  • Assistance with preparation of assurance engagements (review and audit)
    • Assistance preparing checklists, assurance schedules and detailed substantive testing
    • Assurance experience (review and audit) and familiarity with Canada AccountingStandards for Private Enterprises (ASPE) is considered an asset but certainly notrequired
  • Other administrative tasks such as:
    • PDF conversion to Excel and data organization
    • Preparation of T4 and T5 summary/slips
    • Prepare and send engagement letters
    • Prepare and file authorization forms
    • Archive and send copies of tax returns to clients

      Professional Expereience Requirements:

      Preference will be offered to applicants who have already completed Term 1. If you haven’t completed Term 1 co-op, please ensure to identify as many of the specific technical skills you have in your cover letter (listed below).No industry focus required. We have clients in a wide variety of industries.

      Specific Technical Skill Requirements

      While the following experience is not required to apply, preference will be offered to applicants with as much of the following experience as possible:

      • Experience with full-cycle bookkeeping and working knowledge of QuickBooks Online and Xero
        • QuickBooks Online (QBO) is used by over 90% of our bookkeeping client base
        • QBO Pro-Advisor certification is considered an asset but not required
        • Ability to prepare manual adjusting journal entries
      • Experience preparing compilation engagement financial statements (financial information)
      • Experience working with Caseware Working Papers and Caseview Financial Statements
      • Experience preparing simple individual income tax returns
      • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) is required.

      Compensation and Benefits

      Hourly pay for this position is based on an annual salary of $45,500 to $50,960 ($25 to $28 per hour / 35hr workweek) based on your previous experience. Vacation days will be offered.

      This is a remote-based position (you will work from your home-office)
